Save our pool in memory of the men who created it

Fond memories of how Hendy boys sneaked into a closed pool for late night swims.

A Llanelli man has joined the fight to save Hendy Pool. Snakeman Geraint Hopkins, said “People should support the campaign to keep the pool open as it is a historical landmark.”

Mr Hopkins said, “My father helped build the outdoor pool and our pool should be saved in memory of the men who created it. It would be a shame if the pool was lost and I know many people would feel the same”

Back in the 1930’s, armed with pick-axes and spades, his dad and others worked to divert the course of the River Gwili. The Pool was officially opened for public use in 1933 and people came from far and wide to use the facility.

Geraint who use to live in Hendy said he learnt to swim in the Lido and stated, “All the local youngsters who used the pool helped clean it, we use to brush the pool out and paint it at the start of the season”

The pool campaigner said he had fond memories of swimming in the pool in his younger days, “Everybody used to have so much fun there and people came from everywhere to play. It was a day out and the pool was always packed.”

“There used to be a small shed where we would buy pop and crisps and there was a distinct smell of Chlorine. We would be in the pool from 9am until 6pm at night and on Sunday night when the pool was closed boys would jump over the fence to get in”

Mr Hopkins said that, “Carmarthen County Council should keep the pool in memory of all the workmen that worked hard to build it”
