Our first pool |
| |
The photo was taken in the late 1920’s on the eroded bank on the river Gwili. During the summer months our elders would create a dam with large and small boulders, thereby creating a pond suitable for small boys to learn to swim. The pond was affectionately called Pond Jel named after J.L. Thomas of Bradford House... |

The 33 m x 15 m Hendy Outdoor Swimming Pool was built during the depression of the early 1930s, by out-of-work voluntary labour. The tools used during that period were primitive in comparison with today - pick axe, spade, wheelbarrows and trams loaned from nearby collieries... |

It was quite an incredible pool and they used to come from miles around. I am going back to the 1950s when I was young. To be honest it was fantastic. Absolutely jam-packed. There was no health and safety in those days - the highest diving board was a plank 15 ft in the air into six feet of water! It was probably unbelievably dangerous but there were never any accidents or ill health. The pool was thoroughly enjoyed... |

Wonderful. Mum would cut sandwiches for me during the summer months, and I would go to the swimming pool at about 10am for the day... |

I learnt to swim there and basically spent my life there along with hundreds of other guys every day, in the lush summer holidays we had, we would pop to Marios for dinner and then spend the rest of our pocket money in the little tuck shop at the pool... |
