Days gone by

Mr Lyon, who has fond childhood memories of the pool in the 1950s.

"It was quite an incredible pool and they used to come from miles around. I am going back to the 1950s when I was young. To be honest it was fantastic. Absolutely jam-packed.

"There was no health and safety in those days - the highest diving board was a plank 15 ft in the air into six feet of water! It was probably unbelievably dangerous but there were never any accidents or ill health. The pool was thoroughly enjoyed.

"The filtration unit was a bale of straw to stop trout and muck coming in from the river. When it split we had fish and eels and goodness knows what in there."

In 1998 Derrick Lyons led a campaign to keep Carmarthen County Council from closing the Hendy Pool, and kept the pool open until the county closed the pool in 2002

Derrick had become the Chairman of the Hendy Pool Committee during 1999 and held the office until the AGM of the pool committee of April 2006,

During the campaign to save the pool from the bulldozers Derrick gave some fond memories of days gone by and was quoted in the press in 2005 to read the full two page story click here
